Daddy cooked (grilled) 3 species of ducks last night: a green-winged teal, a northern shoveler, and a mallard. Ava was a big fan of both shoveler and teal (and asparagus) during dinner last night (we haven't eaten the mallard yet).
Now, Daddy was careful to explain that usually shovelers don't taste great. This one, however, was delicious. Erik hypothesizes that the good flavor can be attributed to this bird's being caught this fall in Saskatchewan, after it had put on its thick white summer fat layer, right before migration.
Daddy ground up some shoveler for Ava.
The yellow rubber duckie was the fourth duck "species" with which Ava interacted last night:
